Here’s a quick television news roundup:
John Mulaney is set to host SNL for the seventh time on November 14th. The man never misses. The week before, as previously reported, Druski will become the first influencer to host SNL. Before that, Inde Navarrete takes the stage for next weekend’s Halloween episode.
In renewals: Carrie is coming back for a second season. I liked Carrie. I may be in the minority among critics, but it was the biggest show in streaming its first week, ahead of Netflix’s Below. I’ll admit I didn’t love the finale, but I’m hopeful Mike Flanagan can make it make sense. In a good way.
Meanwhile, American Horror Story has been renewed for a 14th season. I figured that after this all-star 13th season, FX would finally put it out of its misery. Apparently not.
In reboot news: They’re bringing back Glee, as most of you have surely heard by now. Lea Michele has officially signed on, and Chord Overstreet and Heather Morris are in talks to return. No word yet on who else is coming back, but given the curse that seems to hang over that show, I’d stay the hell away.
They’re also rebooting Coach, with Ty Burrell in the lead. That feels … weird.
Last week, Apple TV renewed Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, which was a long time coming. Glad to have it back. Tatiana Maslany is terrific in it, and it’s more fun than you’d think to watch Jake Johnson play a total jackass.
Apple TV is also bringing back Imperfect Women for another season. Great cast. Lousy show.
Netflix has picked up The Hunting Wives for a third season ahead of its second-season premiere. That’s a bold move, considering how much viewership most Netflix shows have been shedding in season two. Still, I think The Hunting Wives might buck the trend.
Does anyone remember The Watcher? That Netflix series starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale? It premiered in 2022, pulled in huge numbers, and was quickly renewed. Four years later, it’s finally going into production. Margo Martindale will return, too.
Prime Video has picked up a second season of Neagley, the Reacher spin-off.
Finally, a fun bit of casting: In the Walking Dead spin-off Dead City, Logan Kim plays the son of Glenn, Steven Yeun’s late character. The two never shared the screen in the franchise, since Glenn has been dead for a decade. But now Kim has been cast as Yeun’s son (again) in Pagans, a Netflix supernatural series about a father who becomes the sole caretaker of his two children after the tragic death of his wife. Per the logline: “While his son Nate (Logan Kim) is typical, his daughter, Alice (Sabine Grace), is anything but. What starts as a strained father-daughter relationship soon evolves into something far more sinister.”
There’s a cancellation to report, too: Syfy has nixed the Melanie Scrofano series Revival after one season. I liked it, but it’s hard to keep up with those cable shows that don’t land on Peacock until a week after they air.
