Apple TV+ has canceled Dear Edward after one season. I liked Dear Edward. It was sad, but I am also often drawn to films and television shows about grief. I’m not entirely sure this one needed a second season anyway. It’s a bummer for Jason Katims, though, because the Friday Night Lights showrunner hasn’t managed to get a show into its second season since Parenthood. I wasn’t a huge fan of Rise, but I was sad to see As We See It canceled after one season on Prime.
It’s worth noting that the author of the novel upon which Dear Edward is based, Ann Napolitano, also released one of the best books I’ve read this year in Hello Beautiful.
Elsewhere, I’m not familiar with Netflix’s Bling Empire or its New York spin-off Bling Empire: New York, but the streamer is canceling both after four and two seasons, respectively. It’s a reality series about rich Asian Americans in Los Angeles and New York, described as real-life Crazy Rich Asians.
That’s it for the cancelations this week. There have been a few renewals. The Rookie on ABC, which used to be a bubble show every season, has been renewed for a sixth season. No word yet on whether its spin-off will return. I watch The Rookie. I like The Rookie. I’m glad it’s returning. I don’t like The Rookie: Fed, however, which makes their many crossovers annoying.
I do not watch The Good Doctor, but it clearly doesn’t need me, as it has been renewed for a seventh season by ABC. It has been so successful for the network that it also has a spin-off on the way, The Good Lawyer, starring Kennedy McMann and Felicity Huffman.
ABC has also renewed Will Trent for another season. I wasn’t a fan, but Jen was, and from what I can tell from our commentariat, it was a mixed bag there, too. It’s been doing very well for the network.
