There was a bloodbath at NBC this week, as the network took an axe to several series. I am not terribly surprised that Suits: LA only made it one season. As someone who watched all of Suits during its original run, I could recognize that it was fairly mediocre (especially the latter seasons). Suits: LA was a whole different level of bad. Suits was an easy, breezy watch. Suits: LA felt like a chore. It won’t be missed.
I’m more surprised that Night Court was canceled. I had stopped watching after the first season (because it was not very good), but I thought it still had enough juice to keep going. A shame for John Larroquette.
In addition to Suits: LA and Night Court, NBC also took out Found after two seasons (that show where Zack from Saved by the Bell was a kidnapper being pursued by Shanola Hampton from Shameless), Lopez vs. Lopez after three seasons, and Jesse L. Martin’s Irrational after two seasons.
NBC did offer up a couple of renewals to Law & Order, which will come back for its 25th season, and Law & Order: SVU, returning for its 27th season. Those two shows have a combined 50 seasons. Insane.
Over on Fox, they canceled Rescue HI-Surf after one season, despite some serious marketing efforts. However, they did pick up Joel McHale’s Animal Control for a fourth season and Dennis Leary’s Going Dutch for a second. I’m happy about both of those pickups, as they’re low-key strong comedies. Fox is also bringing back The Masked Singer for its 14th season, but next year, there will only be one season (in the fall) rather than back-to-back runs.
ABC renewed American Idol for a ninth season on that network, along with unscripted series Celebrity Jeopardy, Shark Tank, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, and America’s Funniest Home Videos, which returns for its 36th season. That long-running clip show has been hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro since 2015.
Finally, for what it’s worth, Prime Video put On Call, a thoroughly mediocre cop series, in the wood chipper. It’s being shopped elsewhere.
