Patton Oswalt is no stranger to Hollywood. His filmography is filled to the brim. There, you will find everything from indy darlings to CGI blockbusters. He’s had small, nameless roles and been the above title star. The comedian was a main cast member on over 100 The King Of Queens episodes. It only makes sense that he takes his career to its logical next step: Game Show Host.
The 1% Club is a game show that has been airing in the UK since 2022. In it, a group of 100 contestants is given a £1000 stake. A host then asks them questions which get increasingly more difficult as the game proceeds. The contestants have 30 seconds to answer, and whoever answers wrong is eliminated, their stake then going into a larger pot for the eventual winner. Now, it’s making its way to the U.S.
Amazon Prime Video will be remaking the show for American audiences and has chosen Oswalt as their host. Comedian Lee Mack hosts the original version of the show. Jim Jeffries is the host for the Australian iteration. It only makes sense that another comedian joins their ranks. It’s also a trivia show, something Oswalt has not been shy about loving, both in his stand-up and as a contestant on Celebrity Jeopardy.
Oswalt’s excitement over the project also makes it very enticing. He took to Instagram to share the news in a nerdy (and apt) way. “I have assumed my final form. I have Dawson-ed,” Oswalt said, a reference to long-time Family Feud host Richard Dawson. “I can now summon the dead and augur the future by looking at bird formations. All shall bow before me.”
On the business side, The 1% Club will stream on Amazon Prime and then re-air on FOX. This is a first-of-its-kind partnership between a streamer and a network. Yes, ABC has been airing episodes of Only Murders In The Building (to great success), but that’s all under the House Of Mouse. With FOX paying for the rights to air a streaming show it does not own, it may signal things to come.
