NYC is opening back up, cruise ships are setting sail, and once again I can take a sliver of Ellio’s pizza from a stranger in a smock (or two slivers if said smock person is distracted). Costco is bringing back free samples! Hooray! … Right? Trevor Noah discussed this exciting development on The Daily Show with a mix of genuine excitement and justifiable skepticism.
The current phases of reopening all feel like Barry Allen in Batman v Superman, showing up out of nowhere and yelling, “Am I too soon?! I’m too soon!” However, as Noah explains with tongue-in-cheek, free samples are a big part of the Costco experience. There are whole swaths of people who may return to the megastore just for that.
This all plays into my own excitement. I want to get back out into the world. I haven’t stepped foot in a movie theater in over a year. Movie theaters were my bars, but instead of booze, I had nachos. Still, I’m hesitant when it comes to once again entering a theater, and I’m fully vaccinated!
Aside from an occasional, safe drive to my parents’ house, I haven’t left NYC for the entirety of the pandemic. When it all first started here, things were scary. My wife and I took every precaution, managed to never get sick, and still don’t think I’m ready to grab vegan pepperoni slices off a tray that other people put their mitts on. Even if they are in to-go bags!
When it comes to Costco’s free samples, I don’t see the point? Like handshakes and kissing booths, some things don’t need a comeback post-pandemic. We can all move forward, give the Wakanda salute, and learn how to kiss on our mom’s wig’s manikin head like a normal person.
Trevor Noah, however, could convince me otherwise. Look at him! The dude’s a natural host. Even in a small segment like this, he gives it his all. Despite playing this (mostly) as a joke, he’s convincing. Maybe I’ll get some free samples after all.
Nope. Still not doin’ it.
