I’m going to start with a big old SPOILER WARNING for the new episode of The Last Of Us. I won’t be recapping the show. That’s Tori’s job, and she’s damn good at it. I won’t even go into detail about the episode, necessarily. The new episode was one of the best episodes of television I have seen in some time. One of its stars, Murray Bartlett, dropped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about it.
If you did watch The Last of Us, how about that new episode?! I’m an easy crier. It doesn’t take much. My wife, on the other hand, won’t shed tears often. Yet she was a blubbering mess along with me at the end of the new The Last of Us. The episode tells a post-apocalyptic love story that would not have happened had said apocalypse not happened. The episode is beautifully written and shot (that last frame gutted me). However, it’s the acting that brings things to the next level.
Nick Offerman plays a role we’ve seen from him before, that of a government-and-people-hating survivalist, but through a different lens. He meets Frank, played by Bartlett, and his world is turned upside down. You can see why. Frank is as stubborn as Bill, but he’s also charming and friendly. Bartlett brings that same charm to Colbert’s couch.
Colbert and Bartlett spend most of the interview talking about The White Lotus, a show I have never seen and have no desire to see. I was happy to sit through that talk just to get some more moments with Bartlett. I wanted to live in that episode again, but without watching it because that may leave me crying for the rest of the week.
