Lori Loughlin Pokes Fun of Her College Admissions Scandal on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'

If you haven’t gotten around to this week’s Curb Your Enthusiasm because of the Oscars, it’s a good one. Someone draws a dick on Susie’s billboard, and her sales go up; on Siena Miller’s date with Larry, he gets into her head about an acting crutch she didn’t realize she had (she has to eat fruit); and Larry gets Lori Loughlin, playing herself, into his golf club because no one else would take her because of the college admissions scandal.

That particular storyline played to perfection, so much so that I wish they’d asked Felicity Huffman to do it instead. In the episode, after Larry gets Lori reinstated, she reveals that she cuts corners/cheats in other ways, too: Like having a handicap sticker when she’s not handicapped (“I have Epstein Barr — one hematologist thinks so”), cheating at golf, and, because she’s so competitive, she’s a real dick to Larry when he misses an easy put.

It’s an old-school reminder that the best way to get through a scandal is to own it, lean into it, and be in on the joke. Go the Martha Stewart route.

“This was an idea that we loved from a writer named Teddy Bressman,” Curb executive producer Jeff Schaffer told The Hollywood Reporter. “But it’s not going to be funny with some sort of thinly veiled surrogate. It only works if we get Lori. So we called her manager up, who loved it, and who then talked to Lori, and she said: ‘I’m in, I’m totally game.’ And she was. She was so great. Everything we threw at her, she was game to do. She makes the episode. I’m so glad she wanted to do it.”

Schaffer also hopes that the cameo “helps her career,” although she has already returned to her GAC Family series When Hope Calls.

It’s worth noting, too, that this entire final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm continues to evoke the series finale of Seinfeld, including the fact that Larry’s going to trial for being a good Samaritan after he gave a bottle of water to a thirsty woman standing in line to vote in Atlanta, where it was illegal to do so. Larry also reminded viewers in this week’s episode that, though he had left the series in its final two seasons, he did return to write the finale.
