When I watched Sunday night’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, which sees Larry David arrested and jailed for giving water to a thirty voter who had been standing in line to vote for hours, it didn’t resonate as particularly political. It felt like another instance in the series where Larry David inadvertently gets into trouble for failing to understand appropriate etiquette, or in this case, the law.
That law has been partially struck down, but it doesn’t change the fact that the current Georgia governor, Brian Kemp, signed a law making it illegal to give food or water to people standing in line to vote. However, the Curb episode probably wouldn’t have merited much more than a, “Huh. I forgot about that dumb, racist law,” had Marjorie Taylor Greene not highlighted the politics of the law.
Greene is not ashamed of the law, which sounds like something out of the Jim Crow era. It’s quite the opposite. She’s proud of it and mad at Larry David for coming into her home state of Georgia to make fun of their racist voting laws.
“I watched this week’s episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm and it was a glaring reminder of why most Georgian’s resent Republicans in our state for inviting the nasty commies from California, the Hollywood elites, into our state by dishing out Hollywood tax credits,” Greene said on Twitter. “This week’s episode lied and painted GA conservatives and Trump supporters as racists and red necks and made fun of our good new law that stops the Stacey Abrams vote pandering machine and prevents voter fraud. We in Georgia are fed up with disgusting Hollywood and their disgusting values and elite judgement in our state that is trying to turn GA blue!”
Thanks for amplifying an episode that highlights the absurdity of a law outlawing providing water to a thirsty person who has been standing in line for hours to exercise their civic duty and reminding everyone that Republicans not only passed the law but continue to support it. Larry David may be a “nasty commie,” but it’s the Republicans, not the commies, who deprive voters of water on hot days.
