The 2024 election cycle has been in full swing for, conservatively, 37 years. It isn’t even close to done. Until November, we will continue to be bombarded by messages from both sides of the aisle. The effectiveness of those messages will not be made clear until all the ballots have been cast and counted. What is clear is that Republicans have a problem connecting to female voters.
Jordan Klepper took over the desk of The Daily Show after Jon Stewart this week. He took time to address Republicans having an existential crisis when it comes to female voters. The crux of it is Republicans want to control their bodies, and most women don’t care for that. It’s simple. You can tell just by hearing some of them talk about it.
There’s a Newsmax anchor who says Republicans have a “woman problem.” Stephen Miller, the human equivalent of an ingrown hair, said the GOP needs to find more appealing ways to talk about abortion. Someone on Fox News noted how most people don’t like the “rape and incest thing.” That may seem obvious, but he is talking to Fox News viewers, and octogenarians need reminders.
As Klepper points out, a lot of the suggestions here seem obvious. The most obvious? “Give women their rights back.” A novel concept! But Republicans are not interested in going down that route. They’d rather continue to control women’s bodies but talk about it in a less icky way. But the folks at The Daily Show devised a more “extreme” way to show the GOP the light.
The segment ends with a sketch starring correspondent Michael Kosta as a Republican politician. After a freak accident, he’s turned into a woman (played by correspondent Desi Lydic). It’s only then that the politician realizes that women deserve the right to reproductive healthcare. The sketch won’t change GOP minds, but it does help get some laughs from this awful terrible, no-good election year.
