My twins are two years old, and they are acting like it. There is screaming and crying and general frustration with anything that doesn’t go exactly their way (I get it). However, one of them is already speaking in complete sentences. It is easier, at least, to understand why he is upset, even if I can’t fix it right away. The other child isn’t speaking as clearly and will start flailing about instead of explaining what’s wrong. They are both temperamental two-year-olds who can’t be reasoned with, just in different ways. Despite their age, it is easy to compare them with a group of adults who should know better. I am talking about people who show up at Trump rallies.
Jordan Klepper knows firsthand how rowdy folks can get at Trump rallies. He’s seen everything. There are people in gaudy costumes, idiots using numerology to justify anti-semitism, folks with nooses, and that’s all at one rally! Occasionally, Klepper will encounter supporters that manage to keep their wits about them. They speak clearly, and with intent. It just so happens that they are saying the same batshit things, just in a calmer manner.
That’s what Klepper managed to find when he arrived at Trump’s arraignment in NYC. He had a brief run-in with clout-seeking liar George Santos. That was still the least astounding encounter he had. Jordan found himself speaking to people who were trying their damndest to be taken seriously while saying truly dumb things. There was a similar attitude over on FOX News, with grown people crying, pretending that an ex-president being brought up on corruption charges has broader implications for people who didn’t pay off a porn star to protect their presidential bid.
It’s almost impressive how the people at this arraignment can convince themselves that their favorite scumbag is in the right. They speak more clearly and try to listen, but they’re just as bad as their horn-wearing, capitol-storming brethren. They can string full sentences together, but developmentally they are all the same.
