There have to be at least a few of our regular readers who’ve jumped on the newly resurgent Dancing with the Stars bandwagon over the last two years, thanks at least in part to Andy Richter last season and the, uh, dancing prowess of one Guillermo Rodriguez this season. We’re in that weird stretch of the season where the top-tier contestants have already been established, and we’re waiting for the mid-to-lower-tier dancers to clear the stage so the real competition can begin.
Jockeying among the mid-to-lower tier, honestly, has as much to do with personality as with dancing skill. To wit: Summer House star Ciara Miller was eliminated this week despite turning in a better routine than most of the mid-tier, but I don’t think she connected with the audience the way some of the other contestants have. The same absolutely cannot be said of Jimmy Kimmel’s sidekick, Guillermo Rodriguez, who genuinely cannot dance to save his life but has managed to hang on week after week. As with Andy Richter last year, I suspect that has generated at least a little resentment among the better dancers who’ve been sent home ahead of him.
One of those mid-tier dancers is Jackson Olson, a Savannah Bananas player who — at least to me — is the very definition of a filler contestant. He’s fine. He won’t go far. The question is whether he’ll outlast Guillermo, and that’s the question every week: Elimination is based on a combination of judges’ scores and audience votes, and Guillermo’s scores are bad, so it says a lot about his personality that he’s managed to survive this long.
Anyway, a few days ago, another exhibition baseball player posted his own version of a few of Guillermo’s moves from last week’s performance and tagged Olson in the video. Olson left a comment: “but seriously how did you do this better than him with 2 hours of rehearsal.”
That did not sit well with the Guillermo faithful, and Olson deleted the comment after a massive backlash from a lot of people with no sense of humor. Yes. Can you believe it? Humorless people ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
Not wanting to torpedo his chances with DWTS voters, Olson took to social media to offer his own brand of apology, bringing in Guillermo himself to seal the deal.
I thought the comment was fine. I still want to see Guillermo outlast him.
