Is It Bad 'Alien: Earth' Hasn't Been Renewed for Season 2 Yet?

Alien: Earth dropped its game-changing season finale back in late September, and as of this writing, Disney has very noticeably not renewed the show for Season 2 despite a crazy strong presence on the streaming charts. More importantly, how do you say no to that Eye? Him just a smol bean who wants to bite a Xenomorph directly in the face.

If Alien: Earth is already kaput, it went out on one heck of a cliffhanger to put it mildly. That said, it does have two factors working against it. The biggest is the budget. Alien: Earth cost a load of money, and to its credit, that was evident on screen. The show looked gorgeous, from the sets to making the ballsy move of showing a Xenomorph in daylight. However, the reception to Alien: Earth seemed to be very hot or cold. Either you loved it (guilty) or you absolutely hated it, and we saw that divide in both the comments and behind the walls at Pajiba. Most critics loved it, but the Rotten Tomatoes score shows general audiences weren’t as on board, and that’s who you need tuning into FX and/or streaming on Hulu.

While the now month-long silence from Disney is probably not great, Noah Hawley is still talking up his plans for Wendy and the crew. Here’s what he recently told Empire where Alien: Earth will go if it gets the green light:

“I’m interested in exploring the corporate politics of it,” he says. “As we’ve seen, there’s an irresistible gravitational pull toward monopoly that corporations and billionaires have. There’s a bit of Game Of Thrones to the corporate world that feels interesting to me.” Still, the core of Alien: Earth will be Wendy and friends - moving beyond the island they’ve been inhabiting. “I do think this story of these children’s autonomy continues to be the heart of the show, but Alien is always about levels of containment,” Hawley explains. “The island is a level of containment and what happens when you expand past that level? Ultimately, the show is called Alien: Earth. I know that, given the canon, I can’t blow up the Earth, but I do think that containment is going to be very hard to maintain.”

As for Wendy menacingly announcing to the Lost Boys that “now we rule” in the final moments of the finale, Hawley makes it clear that their reign will probably be very short. “The [Weyland-Yutani] ships are coming and all they have is problems,” he said.

And as for The Eye, Hawley made zero mention of the show’s very obvious main character, so now I kind of hope Alien: Earth really is canceled. That’s not how you treat a star. There’s a little thing called “respect,” Mr. Hawley.
