Alien: Earth delivered its season finale, and with it came one heck of a cliffhanger. I’ll save those details for Tori’s recap later today, but let’s just say it’ll be some real crap if the show doesn’t return for Season 2.
I was under the impression that the show was already locked in for a second season, but creator Noah Hawley set the record straight during his latest interview with The Hollywood Reporter. (Also, does anyone think it’s weird that he played Joe and Wendy/Marcy’s dad? No, just me. OK.)
Here’s what Hawley had to say, and as of this writing, the situation is still up in the air.
Is Alien: Earth renewed for Season 2?
So I don’t know. And look, there are artistic goals and the commercial goals. I think we’ve launched incredibly well. I’m certainly hoping that it’s not a long nail biter of “Can we do this again?” My hope is certainly in the next couple of months to get some kind of sign from them as to whether I should get another job or get back to work.
I’m not a betting man, but I’d good money on the show returning. It’s done huge numbers, besting even Netflix shows on the streaming charts, so the chances are looking pretty darn good. Not for nothing, excluding the Game of Thrones days, genre stuff doesn’t do super huge for us, but Alien: Earth has been a surprisingly strong performer.
As for the future of the show, Hawley touched on that, too. In a nutshell, not even he’s sure how long the show will run, so don’t hold him to any number he gives you. In this interview alone, Hawley contradicted his previous remarks that the show would run for five seasons by narrowing the scope down to two or three, which he then said to ignore.
How many seasons will Alien: Earth have?
I don’t have a destination in mind. I don’t know how long it will take me to get there. It’s been such an amazing act of play for me to enter this franchise and bring my own ideas to it. And just like with Fargo, I think, “Who am I kidding? As long as they let me tell stories in this tone of voice, I’m going to tell stories in this tone of voice.”
So, basically, Hawley is having a blast making Alien: Earth and will keep doing so as long as FX keeps ponying up huge checks. The show is wildly expensive, so that might curtail Hawley’s plans a bit. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Season 2 order any minute now with a concrete answer on the amount of seasons further down the line.
That said, if the show is cancelled, I’m gonna need everyone to do whatever they did to get Jimmy Kimmel back on the air. You cancel my little eyeball boy at your own peril.
