Alex Trebek may be gone, but unquestionably not forgotten. Though he has passed, the beloved game show host is continuing to appear on new Jeopardy! episodes, thanks to his dedication to his infotainment vocation. While each episode plays as a bit of bittersweet balm, the Thanksgiving ep was extra special, as it started with the kind of pep talk many of us need right now.

Trebek died before he knew exactly what Thanksgiving would look like in America. However, considering COVID numbers were on the rise, it wasn’t hard to predict many Americans would be experiencing a far less festive holiday this year. So, Trebek asked us to remember the spirit of this day: thankfulness. With serious Mr. Rogers vibes, he asked us to look to the helpers and take comfort in mankind’s ability for kindness. “We’re going to get through all of this,” he said, “And we’ll be a better society because of it.”

Considering how many flouted COVID safety precautions to engage in turkey and togetherness last week, you might not share Trebek’s optimism. However, there’s a comfort here in remembering we are not helpless in the face of peril. We can be helpers. We can resist. We can be the better people we wish to see.

If you need a bonus boost, revisit another excellent moment in Dad Talk. Here’s Tom Hanks right after Trump was elected, when “America’s Dad” gave us a pep talk. Warning: it will still make you cry and smile and cry more times.

Hang in there, champ. We got this.
