Halloween Isn’t Over If I Keep Watching This Amber Ruffin Sketch

Every November I get a little depressed. I get so excited for October that I abstain from watching anything spooky for all of September. Then I celebrate as soon as October 1st hits. The mix of scary stuff being everywhere for a whole month, Major League Baseball starting its playoffs, and a healthy dose of childhood love for the season all make October special for me. So, needless to say, November 1st blows.

This year, however, I’m keeping the “spooky season” going for a few days by watching a sketch Amber Ruffin did for her late-night show on Friday. She and her cohost Tarik sang a song called Monsters Everywhere and if it’s the last Halloween-related thing I watch this year, I’ll be happy.

The song starts as your classic Halloween tune as Amber and Tarik describe different types of monsters: Werewolves, vampires, mummies. Things take a turn though when she starts mentioning other kinds. Amber laments the creepiness of “White women who follow me as I walk throughout the store,” and Tarik brings up “men who say brotha when they only talk to me.”

It is a hilarious bit that only adds to Ruffin’s long list of comical songs and like all the others before it, it’s driven home by how much fun the two are having. Amber’s excitement at being dressed as Sho’nuff from Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon is palpable and infectious and I love love love it.

Halloween may be over but I’m going to watch this sketch a few more times to keep the good times rolling for just a little while longer.
