Before I get into this, the above photo is from The Mandalorian Season 1 premiere, which happened in 2019. Five years ago. Half a decade. What the hell is time?
For those of you playing the home game, Gina Carano’s lawsuit against Disney is moving forward. The actress is suing over her very public firing from The Mandalorian, which occurred following a series of incendiary social media posts about COVID mitigation efforts and transgender rights. She’s claiming wrongful termination and discrimination while Disney argues that it has a constitutional right not to be associated with rhetoric that “trivializes the Holocaust.” Disney attempted to use that defense to get the lawsuit dismissed, but a judge denied that request, and here we are.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carano’s legal team is trying to paint a picture that she was treated differently than her male co-stars — namely, Pedro Pascal.
In her lawsuit, filed in February, she alleged that Disney and Lucasfilm turned a blind eye to others, who she said made offensive and denigrating posts directed toward Republicans, while she was allegedly fired for her cultural and religious beliefs. She pointed to Pascal’s 2017 post comparing former President Donald Trump to Hitler.Other posts from Pascal cited in the lawsuit include one of him comparing the United States response to those entering the country illegally to Germany’s concentration camps.
Carano is also looking to call other high-profile names to testify, including Kathleen Kennedy, Jon Favreau, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek, and Bear Grylls. Why that last one? Well, Disney allegedly pulled an episode of Grylls’ show that featured Carano after she was terminated.
There’s also going to be a big stink made over Carano losing out on a chance to lead the proposed Mandalorian spinoff Rangers of the New Republic. Carano’s legal team is hoping to get Favreau to confirm those plans. I’m no fancy lawyer, and I haven’t read a John Grisham book in over 20 years, but it sounds to me like Carano is looking to get a nice, big, fat check to make this all go away. There has been talk of forcing Disney to rehire her, but I doubt she’ll be content with a cameo in The Mandalorian movie, which is where the franchise is at right now. They ran the whole thing into the ground, Gina!
Not to mention, “sued her way back into Star Wars” is probably not gonna bring your career back. Hope the cheap pronoun gags were worth it.
