Those who were wondering why Lorne Michaels approved Dave Chappelle’s antisemitic monologue over the weekend may be interested to know that apparently, he did not. According to Page Six, Chappelle performed a different monologue during dress rehearsal before revealing the antisemitic monologue for the first time during the live show.

It means that Chappelle knew exactly what he was doing, and he didn’t want the SNL staff to shut him down before he was given the opportunity to piss off the Jewish community and the Anti-Defamation League.

Interestingly, in the fake monologue he performed during rehearsal, Chappelle made a joke about an SNL writer who reportedly refused to work with him amid rumors that several staff writers were boycotting the show because of Chappelle’s transphobia. Chappelle’s team spent all week shutting down rumors that there were any boycotts. I’m assuming that the joke was at writer Celeste Yim’s expense.

The joke, according to someone who was reportedly there, was something along the lines of, “The news was reporting some writers boycotting, when it actually was one writer using they/them pronouns.” The fake monologue reportedly was about Chris Rock movies and the attack on him at a comedy club.
