In the year of our Lord, 2026, a man who said himself that he looks like a “gas station boiled egg” got up in front of a large, national audience and, on live TV, said that women at the gym dress like “wh***s” during the SNL monologue this weekend, adding, “Look. I’m sorry there’s no other way to describe it.” There’s plenty of other ways to describe it, such as: “Appropriately dressed for working out.” And then Shane Gillis turned around and said that American political culture these days basically separates people into two camps: Gay, or Hitler.
What about pigs? Just heinously sexist pigs?
Dan Levy, of Schitt’s Creek fame, for one, is not having it, taking to Instagram to call Gillis out for the monologue.
“Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them wh***s, it makes the men calling them wh***s misogynists. There’s a difference there,” Levy said, adding that he’d “seen more men’s nipples at the gym than I’ve ever seen women showing their bodies off.”
“I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television, and to be honest more men need to be standing up in opposition to it, because it’s complacency that has created the environment with which women are sexually assaulted and it’s a ‘conversation’ as opposed to a crime.“Men need to be defending women more. This is not a women’s issue, this is an everybody issue. Because the more that men objectify women in the media, the more that other men see them as objects and treat them as objects.”
I hate that Grace Reiter’s break-out episode was overshadowed by Gillis’s terrible monologue and the F-bomb he dropped, but I do hope that the attention the episode has received brings more eyes to musical guest Rosalía, because she was amazing and everything that Shane Gillis is not.
