Through six seasons of the Showtime series, Billions has managed to (mostly) maintain viewer interest by constantly rearranging the chess pieces. After five seasons, however, it looked as though the series had run out of configurations with Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) and Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis). The circumstances surrounding Lewis’ decision to leave the series were awful — his wife, Helen McCrory, was privately battling breast cancer and unfortunately did not survive it — but by replacing his character with one played by Corey Stoll, the series was able to inject new life into the show.

Now Axelrod is coming back. Lewis confirmed as much on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night (and having seen him in seven seasons of Homeland and four seasons of Billions, it’s still strange to hear his British accent):

Lewis will apparently return for six episodes, and my guess is that his return will probably also help Showtime set up its Billions universe, which will include up to four spin-offs, including Millions and Trillions (not a joke).

Recall that at the end of season six, Corey Stoll’s Prince lost $3.5 billion and Chuck went to prison, but was sprung free in order to ruin Prince’s career. Axe, meanwhile, is in Switzerland dodging criminal charges. Axelrod’s return should set up an interesting contrast between two philosophies: One that mostly wants profit (Axe) and another more interested in power (Prince).

There’s no release date yet on season seven of Billions, but I suspect it will follow Yellowjackets, so sometime around mid-year.
