The White House will be celebrating this season with “over 20 indoor holiday parties.” My initial reaction was “good LORD that sounds exhausting” but that’s because I don’t exactly flourish at parties. But the real concern here is that the Trump administration will possibly expose hundreds to COVID-19 while the virus is at its peak. The crew at Stephen Colbert’s Late Show knows this and reacted appropriately.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Colbert’s opening segments of late have been absolute gold. They’re punchy, catchy, funny, and timely. With everything from song parodies to videos with seemingly no written dialogue, they make the whole process look effortless. And it should be no surprise that Trump and his cronies are often in the talk show’s crosshairs.
The newest opening bit shows just what a White House Christmas could look like this year. Big, gaudy decorations, a sea of smiling (mostly white) people, and Death. The video gets justifiably dark towards the end. The ramifications of these parties could be deadly serious (nailed it) and Colbert’s Crew makes that clear in the best way they know how.
