The fallout from last week’s hate crime in Georgia that saw the death of eight people is still being felt. It will continue to be felt for some time. Seeing how people deal with it will be telling when it comes to who they are as people. You will see the wrong kind of reactions. For now, though, I want to show you one of the right ones. I want to show you Amber Ruffin.
The job of a late-night host is not all fun and games. Sometimes you have to take things seriously and speak from the heart. You can still joke around, keep things light, but your messaging has to be clear. That’s what we got from Amber on Friday. She took time out of her show and devoted one of her “How Did We Get Here?” segments to discussing the attack and, well, how we got to it.
Ruffin is able to walk the line between serious and light so effortlessly. It’s another wonderful example of why she’s so absolutely perfect for her job. It contains facts and feelings, and dammit, they go together pretty well. It’s a smart, researched, well-delivered take.
The video has made the rounds on Twitter, which is great. More messaging like this should be amplified. So please, take a few minutes out of your day and listen. That’s all I ask.
