Staying strong in the face of tragedy is not easy. It’s even harder when the person responsible for said tragedy is found not guilty. A lot of people dealt with that this last Friday. Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty on all charges laid against him. Charges included the murder of Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber. It was a sad day that was, unfortunately, not at all surprising. The lack of surprise makes it easy to feel discouraged and disillusioned. Luckily, Amber Ruffin was there to remind us all that we still matter.

It was a simple message that she delivered in real-time. The verdict for the Rittenhouse trial was delivered minutes before Amber was set to record her show. You can immediately see her wrestling with the implications of the verdict; anger, and sadness, and helplessness. Yet, at that moment, she shines through with strength and character. It was a career-defining moment for Ruffin. She shows how vulnerable she’s feeling while managing to deliver a powerful statement of encouragement.

People in Amber’s position don’t have to seize moments like this. In a country that feels more divided each day, you’ll often see celebrities choose the route of not getting “political.” Not Amber Ruffin. She knows that, when she wants, she can use her voice for good. She can offer something more than just entertainment. There’s something deeper and more meaningful about what she does here that not only speaks to who she is on stage but who she is in her heart.
