Thrilled as we were about Gwendoline Christie’s casting and appearance in The Force Awakens, I think we can all agree there wasn’t nearly enough of Captain Phasma. ‘Twas merely a bittersweet tease. We’ve tried not to dwell, and taken solace in the fact she’ll soon be back on Game of Thrones (not to mention we’ll be able to see more of her gorgeous face).
A while back, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy reassured us that Christie’s Captain Phasma was an important character; we hoped her story would be continued in a future film.
“She’s an important character, a baddie in the best sense of the word.”
At this weekend’s SAG awards, Christie, herself gave People the lowdown on Phasma’s return, and again spoke about how cool she thought it was that J.J. Abrams offered her a role originally imagined as male.
“I will be in the next Star Wars movie. I think that’s an exclusive, actually.I was very overexcited. I made no secret of the fact that I really campaigned for the part for a long time. And then I was delighted when J.J. Abrams wanted to have me in the film and then wanted to cast me in this role that had originally been designed for a man. I thought the costume was incredibly striking. I also just liked this notion of a female stormtrooper. I felt it encouraged diversity and it was doing something new and it was an interesting bit of casting for women, and I hope that in something that was such a mainstream success it would breed more of those kind of opportunities for other women.”
Christie’s gorgeous, shimmery gown recalls Phasma’s chrome armor, and she’s positively adorable listing off the reasons Game of Thrones’ should win SAG awards (“…consequently, as it’s the biggest cast, it should win.”) Watch and adore her for yourself.
She’s just the most gracious, lovely stormtrooper, ever.
