Let's Overanalyze: Did Nicki Minaj Awkwardly Rebuff Colin Jost's Attempt to Hug Her on 'SNL'?

This is how ‘Weekend Update’ ended over the weekend.

Let’s unpack what’s going on here, OK?

What we’re seeing is the segment come to a close. Dewey-eyed Nicki Minaj, playing Kim Kardashian in the segment, waves at the audience lovingly while Colin Jost glances at her longingly and does that thing with his lip.

Next, he reaches over and gently places his hand on the small of her back. Is he looking for Minaj to return the gesture? Whatever it was, after batting her eyes, Minaj glances back at Jost in a way that maybe, maybe suggests: Get your hand off of me, bro. Colin quickly pulls his hand back and signs off. “For ‘Weekend Update,’ I’m Colin Jost …”

There’s a lot of important things going on in the world today, but I think we should focus all of our brain power on this very important question: Did Minaj rebuff Colin Jost?

I’ve watched this GIF at least 36 times, and I am baffled. This is a mystery. I mean, on the one hand, Jost does look at Minaj fondly. He does reach over in a friendly manner, and he does pull his hand back quickly when she glances back at him in a not particularly friendly way.

But maybe she was still in character, as Kardashian. Or maybe Jost was simply reaching over to signal the end of the sketch? Then again, she was waving at the audience. I think she understood the segment was over. Why was Jost trying to get her attention?

Watch again?

Friendly reminder to end the segment or awkward rebuff?

We may never know.
