If you were wondering why the Tracy Morgan episode was so much better than basically every other SNL episode since Seth Meyers left, it was mostly because Tracy Morgan was the host, and he had some assistance from Tina Fey, Larry David, and Alec Baldwin. But it might have also had something to do with the fact that Colin Jost — as of that episode — was no longer a head writer on Saturday Night Live.
According to Splitsider, SNL’s about us page, and the credits on the episode, Colin Jost was busted from co-head writer of SNL back to the regular writing staff. Jost has been a head writer since the 2012-2013 season (or when the show started to go to hell).
Bryan Tucker and Rob Klein will remain as co-head writers, which is a position they’ve held with Jost since season 39.
Presumably, the demotion came so that Jost could focus more on his efforts as co-anchor of “Weekend Update,” where he has shown much improvement in the last two weeks, alongside Michael Che.
However, it is worth noting that Tina Fey and Seth Meyers never seemed to have any problem serving as both “Weekend Update” anchors and head writers.
There’s been no word, however, about whether Rashida Jones has demoted Jost from boyfriend to casual sex partner.
There is also no word about what the hell has happened to Cecily Strong on SNL. WHERE DID SHE GO?
