I went to see Abigail the other day, on a Monday night that followed a particularly hellish Monday workday, and it was exactly what I needed at that moment: A perfectly fun and goofy, yet well-structured, absorbing little film. It drags on a little bit at the end, but what I really appreciated about Abigail was its willingness to use tropes to its benefit. Characters, plot beats, horror rhythms—there’s nothing wrong with falling back on established patterns if you do it well! Paradoxically, when films do that these days, it almost makes them feel fresh. A natural consequence of a cinema landscape populated by incoherent nonsense, I suppose. Reddit had this topic on its mind when it asked the question: ‘What are some movie lines that make you cringe?’ The thing about lines like the ones listed, though, is that in the right hands, they can be a source of potent joy.
