What Must It Feel Like Not to Give a Damn About Anyone Else?

You know what phrase I have slowly grown to hate? “Getting back to normal.” I hate it because the way that a lot of people mean it is, “You’re going to have to wait a few weeks or months or years to go to the hairdresser again,” or eat in a nice restaurant or go to Disney World. But, like, 90 percent of us aren’t worried about returning to that normal. The only “normal” we care about is ensuring that we can remain in our homes and that we can afford to feed our loved ones. If someone were to say, “You’re going to have to stop going out for a few months, but you won’t lose your home,” most people would be like, “Cool. That’s all we want to hear.” But we live in America, so that’s not even guaranteed.

And then there are these people:

“It’s time for us to be able to buy the things that we need, and go to the hairdresser.”

In Michigan and other places around the nation, protestors — mostly Trump supporters — are demanding that their states re-open. In some places, it looks like this:

In other instances, they’re not even bothering to stay in their car.

And you know what? If this were, like, “These people are only going to hurt themselves,” I would be like, “Whatever. You do you. I hope you don’t get sick, but if you do, that was a calculated risk on your part.” But these people aren’t just putting themselves at risk. They’re gonna go home, and little Timmy is gonna get the virus, and then Timmy is gonna play pitch with Tommy across the street, and Tommy is gonna pick up the virus from the baseball they’re tossing back and forth, and Tommy is gonna get his mother sick, and Tommy’s mother works in a nursing home, and now 40 people are dead.

Sadly, this movement is not slowing down, as some conservatives grow ever more restless, so much so that Governors in some states — like Mike DeWine in Ohio — who were initially praised for the way they handled the response are now coming under fire for not re-opening.

I suspect that, in some parts of the country anyway, the pressure will be too intense to ignore, and states will start to re-open before we are ready (and we are still nowhere near ready) and we’ll all end up paying for it when our healthcare system falters under the weight of that woman who needs to get to the hairdresser.
