Say Goodbye to Sean Spicer's Daily Press Briefings
There have been rumors literally since the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration that Sean Spicer would be fired, but he’s managed to survive for four months now. However, Politico is reporting what has been rumored for days: That Sean Spicer will not continue with his daily press briefings after the foreign trip. He is not, however, expected to be fired, just receive a diminished role. Sarah Huckabee Sanders will assume his role for most daily White House briefings, although those will reportedly be scaled back, as well.
The briefings have become one of the most dreaded parts of the president’s day, and Trump has told allies and aides he doesn’t want Spicer, who has developed a belligerent persona from behind the podium, publicly defending and explaining the message anymore, officials added.
There were rumors earlier this week that Fox News’ Kimberly Guilfoyle would take over as Press Secretary, but those rumors apparently were started by Guilfoyle herself (she is currently under contract with Fox News). A piece in the Washington Examiner — which some suggest was planted by Sean Spicer — pushed back at any such notion. “President Trump is “furious” at reports that Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle is gunning for White House spokesman Sean’s Spicer’s job, telling aides that his press secretary is a vital part of his operation.”
Trump has cast a lot of blame for his self-inflicted problems over the first months of his administration on his communications team, and while I would stop well short of feeling sorry for Sean Spicer, he has been put in a no-win situation of having not only to defend an indefensible President, but having that same President undercut him day after day after day. I have no idea why Spicer would accept a diminished role rather than getting the f*ck out of Dodge while he can, but I suspect Trump wants to keep him so that he doesn’t have yet another spurned and bitter ex-employee leaking stories about him.
All I do know is that when Spicer finally extricates himself from the White House, he’s going to have a hell of a book deal waiting for him.
In the meantime, we’ll be seeing a lot less of Melissa McCarthy on SNL. Here’s some bloopers from the set of “Sean Spicer Returns.”
