On the first night of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump and the Republicans — according to the NYTimes — “mounted a misleading defense of President Trump’s record … while unleashing a barrage of attacks on Joseph R. Biden Jr. and the Democratic Party that were unrelenting in their bleakness.”

I mean, I didn’t watch it, because I care about my mental health and I know that every lie, every misleading attack, and all the revisionist rhetoric would do a number on my blood pressure. Donald Trump, Jr. apparently spent much of his speech praising his father’s management of the pandemic, in spite of the 180,000 person death count and in spite of polls consistently showing the country thinks he has managed it poorly.

Former NFL player Herschel Walker also endorsed Trump, and suggested that Trump is not a racist because Herschel Walker would never be friends with a racist. A Black Georgia Democrat also endorsed Trump, although I’m not sure I’d call anyone who supports Trump a “Democrat.” (Twitter had a lot of very mean things to say about this guy that I won’t repeat here.)

But I’m not here for any of that. I’m here for the viral moments, and there were a couple. I’m not going to punish you with Kimberly Guilfoyle’s entire speech, but suffice to say, she brought this energy to the entire thing.

Twitter went into overdrive, and by this morning, Rita Repulsa was trending:

And Cecily Strong was trending:

And The Purge was trending, although to be fair, that was more because of Ken and Karen, who suggested in their speech that if Joe Biden was elected, people of color and Marxists would eat your suburban babies. “They want to abolish suburbs all together,” Karen said. “Abolish.”

But back to Guilfoyle and the Twitter response to her unhinged ravings, because this was last night’s biggest highlight:

I hate to bring it up, but we should all be reminded that Guilfoyle used to be married to Gavin Newsom. That says something about one of them.

It is also worth noting that Guilfoyle’s boyfriend, Donald Trump, Jr., was also trending, along with “cocaine.”

And if you are looking for a quick summary of the night, Walter Shaub has you covered.

Anyway, that’s night one of the RNC!
