On Monday evening, President Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned after it was revealed that Flynn communicated with Russia about revoking sanctions placed by President Obama while he was still a private citizen, directly violating the Hatch Act. It’s still unclear to what extent Trump, Mike Pence, or anyone else in the deeply pro-Russia administration knew about Flynn’s illegal communications, but no one’s been able to deliver a straight answer thus far.
According to senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, it’s “highly likely” the senate will lead an investigation of Flynn. And in the meanwhile, as we eagerly count down the days until the next inevitably resignation or termination of yet another Trump higher-up, let’s just savor the filthy irony of the fact that Flynn in July led attendees of the Republican National Convention in chanting “Lock Her Up.” You know, because Hillary Clinton, like Steve Bannon with his unsecured email and Trump with his unsecured Android phone, had a private email server.
In case you’ve forgotten, watch the cult-like footage below for yourself:
This is just one example of the stark hypocrisy of the Trump administration, which is everything Trump ever had the audacity to admonish Clinton for on the campaign trail. Her “politically correct,” purported infringements on free speech are now manifest in his censorship of the Twitter accounts of different national organizations, gag order placed on reproductive rights organizations, and threats to defund any body, be this UC Berkeley or the state of California itself, that protests him. Clinton’s coziness with big donors and Goldman Sachs now manifests itself in Trump’s appointment of the Republican party’s biggest donors into his cabinet, with other cabinet members and chief adviser Bannon executives and former investment bankers from Goldman. And of course, as for Clinton’s purported corruption, we need look no further than this incident with Flynn.
This administration isn’t only corrupt, nepotistic and deeply incompetent, it’s also rooted in fundamental, irreconcilable hypocrisy.
