Ben Carson — the reserved neurosurgeon who has made great gains on Donald Trump in recent weeks by appearing to be a sane, rational alternative — has been making his opinions on guns known in the wake of the mass shooting in Oregon. The sanity facade has cracked.
Carson is, as Trevor Noah noted two nights ago, “for people who like Donald Trump, but hate his charm and charisma. Ben Carson’s like the drug-free cocaine for people who don’t want to get high but just like snorting white powder.”
A couple of days ago, Ben Carson told the media that, if he’d have been in the room when the Oregon mass shooter had opened fire, he would’ve bum rushed the shooter and encouraged everyone else to do the same and the casualties would’ve been minimal.
This is a moronic remark to make for anyone, much less a Presidential candidate. But when called upon the supposed gaffe, Ben Carson stuck to his story, insisting that he could’ve rallied those in the room behind him to attack the shooter.
Ben Carson is a fucking idiot.
Noah went off on Carson.
“I think he’s overestimating how inspiring his presence might be,” said Noah. “Chastising victims of a shooting for what you assume was their cowardice is what most normal candidates would consider a gaffe. But I will admit Ben Carson does practice what he preaches, because even though the media kept taking shots at him, he kept charging into those interviews… What do you really expect the victims to do? I don’t understand this. This guy would make the worst hostage negotiator ever. ‘All right sir, I need you to stay calm and put your gun down. Everyone else rush him, rush him now, rush him! How many people are dead? Well, at least it wasn’t everyone.’”
It gets worse.
Yesterday, on CNN, Ben Carson actually suggested to Wolf Blitzer that the Holocaust would’ve gone much differently had the Jews possessed guns.
Carson: German citizens were disarmed by their government in the late 1930s, and by the mid-1940s Hitler’s regime had mercilessly slaughtered six million Jews and numerous others whom they considered inferior … Through a combination of removing guns and disseminating deceitful propaganda, the Nazis were able to carry out their evil intentions with relatively little resistance.
Blitzer: So, just clarify, if there had been no gun control laws in Europe at that time would six million Jews have been slaughtered?
Carson: I think the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed.
Blitzer: Because they had a powerful military machine, as you know, the Nazis.
Carson: I understand that. I’m telling you that there is a reason that these dictatorial people take the guns first.
In the course of less than a week, Ben Carson has transformed Donald Trump into the sane alternative. He has out-flanked Trump’s brand of loony on the right.
I cannot believe these people are viable Presidential candidates. I also cannot believe that this guy could now be considered the voice of reason within the Republican party:
At least Carson has the vote of THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN MEDIA, Rupert Murdoch, who believes Carson would be the first “real” black President.
