Right out of the gate, the big headline here is that Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon are bringing back some of that golden age SNL magic by working together on a new comedy series on Netflix. The smaller headline is that the series sure sounds a lot like Stick. How is this not Stick?

Via Deadline:

The untitled 10-episode series stars Ferrell, in his first TV comedy series, as Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, a fictional golf legend. Shannon will play his foul-mouthed ex-wife Stacy.

Originally, Ferrell was to star in the comedy alongside Ramy Youssef, with the two co-creating it alongside Josh Rabinowitz. Youssef, Rabinowitz as well as Andy Campagna of Youssef’s Cairo Cowboy banner all left the project last year due to creative differences, sources said.

David Gordon Green has also joined the series as well as Ferrell’s dear friend and Will & Harper co-star Harper Steele, but again, this sounds a lot like Stick.

Don’t get me wrong, unlike Stick, I’ll probably watch this. As for Dustin, he already bought a Titleist hat and is sitting in front of the TV. This is his catnip. Look at what he wrote about Stick:

It doesn’t quite soar to the heights of Ted Lasso or Shrinking, at least not yet, but it lives in the same warm, character-driven milieu Apple TV+ has made its signature: likeable characters, recognizable actors, and a formula that works. The first three episodes dropped this week, and the best compliment I can pay it is this: I wanted to binge the whole thing. The weekly release strategy, though, might help it accrue a steady following over time. It’s already found its way to the top of Apple TV+’s top ten, so hopefully the series (which got a two-season order) will, uh, stick around for seasons to come.

Take that formula and add beloved SNL stars to the mix? It’s like somebody built this show in a lab just for Maine’s #1 Internet Guy. (Love ya, buddy.)
