We saw Bob Trevino Likes It at the SXSW Film Festival last year, where it won both the audience award and the jury award. It’s won the audience award at many film festivals because it’s exactly that kind of movie: a crowd-pleasing, tearjerking heartwarmer. It’s probably the most moving film I’ve seen since CODA. It’s beyond lovely, funny, and just warm as hell.

The film comes from Tracie Laymon and stars John Leguizamo and Barbie Ferreira, who was kind of run out of Euphoria, although she is tremendous here. It’s about a young woman, estranged from her father, who finds another man with the same name on Facebook and, out of loneliness, connects with him. The guy, Bob Trevino, is also lonely and has a fatherly itch he needs to scratch, and the two form a sort of family together.

It’s like a Fredrik Backman novel come to life. I’m glad it’s being released in theaters in March, but I wish it were getting a bigger push on something like Apple TV+ or Hulu, where it could find the massive audience it deserves. It’s really good, though it’ll probably be a hard sell for marketing departments.

The film also features this guy, who plays the estranged father. He’s good, though I didn’t realize who he was until Seth told me after the movie. My mind was a little blown (I’ll put his name in the comments if you want to guess out loud in front of your laptops or phones first).
