Trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Teases Big Changes for Spidey

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has been one of the best things to come out of the MCU. He nails the character, his movies have been a lot of fun (though, admittedly, I’ve only seen the second one once), and he steals any scene he’s in when he shows up in other films. He’s great, and his next movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, teases more adventures ahead for the young wall-crawler, well setting up plenty of mysteries and pushing him further into the universe.

The trailer was teased yesterday through a series of short clips before being released today, and look, hindsight is 20/20, but I swear that when I saw a clip of a sweaty Tom Holland collapsing on the floor in what looked like his apartment, I was fairly certain that they’d be turning this into a Spidey mutation story. I promise! Mainly because Peter Parker turning into a spider-monster was a big part of the animated series from the 90s (at least for me), and that has permanently influenced how I react to seeing Spidey be sick in… any way. And, well, that seems to be happening.

In addition to Spidey changing, we also get to see plenty of the MCU in the new trailer. One of the first bits of action shows Spider-Man arguing and working with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. When Peter needs help for his sudden mutations, he turns to Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, who really sells the heartbreak (at least on our end) of no one knowing who Peter is, thanks to the mishigas that happened in the last movie. Spidey is going to be pretty lonely this go around, even looking at his old friends from a (somewhat) safe distance.

We get to see a lot of Holland trying to get close to his old friends, Ned Leeds and MJ (played by Jacob Batalon and Zendaya), who also don’t remember him. This looks like it will be the big driving force for Peter in the film, in addition to whatever changes he’s going through. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t get resolved in this film. Given the feel of the trailer and, like, the title of the film, it looks like we’ll be getting a whole new status quo for Spider-Man that could stretch over the next couple of movies (depending on what happens in the Avengers films).

There are also plenty of villains in this trailer. We get to see Spider-Man tangling with the Hand, Scorpion (now in a costume with a tail and everything), there’s some villain that appears to be body-hopping like in Fallen, and someone is wearing what appears to be a burlap sack on their head while raising their arms in front of machinary, so they’re likely some kind of mysterious bad person. Plus, someone catches Peter mid-fall (maybe with a web) and is not revealed. It’s a jam-packed trailer, so here’s hoping the movie maintains the energy (and Holland’s track record).
