Heading into the summer, there were rampant reports that Tom Hardy was getting fired from MobLand Season 3 because of his alleged on-set behavior. The Daily Mail claimed he got on the wrong side of Helen Mirren, but days later, she gushed about him on Instagram as the show locked down its Season 3 renewal with Hardy intact.
Jump to last night, and here’s the whole MobLand gang at the Season 2 premiere smiling more than they’ve ever smiled together. (Trust me, I had to sift through tons of photo from the Season 1 premiere, and Hardy was noticeably more stoic.) There was also lots of feting of Hardy and downplaying of any sort of unpleasantness.
Via Variety:
After the cast and audience sang “Happy Birthday” to Ritchie, who turns 58 today, the director spoke movingly about the cast, saying they’ve been “magnificent, it’s been nothing other than a pleasure to work with these monsters of creativity.”“Lady Helen — Dame Helen, fantastic Helen, Queen Helen — has been nothing other than an inspiration and a force of creativity,” Ritchie said. Super positive all day long, super creative all day long. Pierce Brosnan, your lordship, I can say exactly the same about Pierce and my old brother Tom Hardy.”
“I’m going to come and give a quick cuddle,” Ritchie added before darting across the stage and hugging Hardy.
Pierce Brosnan surprisingly addressed the feuding rumors, and we’ll get to that in a second.
Via Deadline:
“Oh my God, it was a storm in a teacup, really,” the James Bond star told Press Association. “I love the dude. I love Tom Hardy. I’m a massive fan of the man’s work. Truly.“We are rock solid as a company, as a family. Everyone shows up for work, and everybody’s just there on the spot. It moves very fast so it’s not like we go out and socialise and go to the pub or anything like that.”
As both Deadline and Variety note, Hardy’s problem was reportedly with showrunner Jez Butterworth and producer David Glasser. According to Variety, Hardy and Guy Ritchie recruited Butterworth to help the crack the show heading into Season 1 where things went smoothly. In Season 2, Hardy reportedly started asking for script changes and showing up late, which did not go over well with Butterworth and Glasser. However, it was all smiles and praises at last night’s premiere.
“Without further ado, the captain of our ship,” Glasser told the audience, “And the man who really, really pushed the envelope for us to get this to where we want to do Season 1 and Season 2, and was with it from the beginning and stayed with it to the bitter end of us getting through this incredible season, ladies and gentlemen — Tom Hardy.”
In closing, Tom Hardy is a series of contrasts. Just ask Kat Dennings’ mom.
