Kat Dennings Was Almost Furiosa, Too

Welcome to “Everyone Who Was Almost in Mad Max: Fury Road Week,” apparently. Yesterday, I covered how Gal Gadot and Tom Hiddleston made it pretty far in the audition process, which sparked reactions like, “There is no planet where Gal and Charlize are auditioning for the same role. Not even close.” Actually, there is. It’s called Earth. This exact sort of thing happens all the time in Hollywood. Wilson Bethel came within arms-reach of being Captain America. If your reaction to that is “Who?” welcome to my point.

For further evidence, here’s Kat Dennings revealing that she screen-tested with Tom Hardy for Fury Road. It’s very easy to be cynical about studio filmmaking, but casting directors really do hit the pavement to find the best actor for the role. (Hardy also had competition.) On top of that, George Miller was particularly picky about his leads, which is one of the many reasons why Fury Road spent years in development hell.

“The dialogue was a couple of pages and kind of vague,” she shared. “And basically what happened was an acting class, if it was on … the worst day of your life.”

She continued: “At one point, they had us switch roles. They had the camera and had us running around the corner. The worst part of it, I do believe, was when the acting coach told us to say the lines without saying the lines. Encouraging us to just make noises. Instead of the lines.”

As we all know, Hardy went on to be a nightmare for Charlize Theron to work with, but apparently, that was not the case with Dennings. In fact, it was the total opposite.

Not only did Dennings praise Hardy’s creativity as they worked through the unusual audition process, but when he found out she didn’t have a car, he drove Dennings to her parents’ house. Once there, she headed to her room for a nap, and figured that was that.

“Few hours later, I go back into the main house and Tom Hardy is still there,” Dennings said. “Having tea with my mother, and just chatting it up. So, I can’t say enough about Tom Hardy. I will be a fan of his for life. I think he’s a wonderful person. And my mom still talks about him.”
