Timothée Chalamet Is ‘Beyond Redemption’ in New ‘Dune 3’ Trailer

Dune 3 is a movie I kind of keep forgetting about. It’s not that I’m not excited, quite the opposite, in fact. I loved the first two films, have a blast watching them with my wife, and there’s a good chance we will shell out babysitter money (for TWINS) so that we can go and see it together. That’s how important it is. And that would have been the case before I saw the new trailer for the film. But, dangit, I’m even more psyched now!

According to Variety, the trailer drops us 17 years after the last film, with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides continuing his war on the galaxy. He’s killed a lot of people, broken a lot of trust, and earned a lot of fear. We also see the return of Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho, an old friend who died in the first film, commenting on how far Paul has fallen. There’s already some interesting dramatic work on Momoa’s part on display.

We also get to see more of Robert Pattinson’s bleached-blonde villain, Scytale, who will attempt to dethrone Paul. It’s the second time I’ve seen a trailer this year that involves Pattinson waiting in a dimly lit room, plotting to take out the lead character (the other being The Odyssey). Dude has found his niche this year, that’s for sure.

While the trailer looks great and I am excited, it does beg the question: where the hell is the Avengers: Doomsday trailer? Like, a real one? The films are still set to open against each other, and I kind of doubt that they will eat into each other’s audiences. While both will be action-packed spectacles that seek to tie up years of threads, Dune is more of an adult movie and, ironically enough, requires less homework.

They will likely both do well, given the season. Dune 3 might do less, but it will still be heralded as a success, because Chalamet has been called the King of Christmas, even if his movies only do okay around that holiday. That said, it’s arguable that Dune 3 may have to work harder to pull in audiences. Doomsday could earn money just because of the novelty of its concept. It’s going to be interesting to watch play out, and I know I’ll be seated for both.
