‘The Odyssey’ Removed From X After Millions of Views

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey has been a massive success. It had his biggest opening weekend ever, a record-breaking second weekend, incredible reviews, and ecstatic audience reactions. Even my mother-in-law out in Oklahoma, who was apprehensive at best, had an incredible time. The film is a four-quadrant hit, and despite having some new competition in the form of a certain wall-crawler this weekend (Tom Holland is having a good summer), The Odyssey will be one of the biggest films of the year, despite a bunch of C.H.U.D.S. claiming that wouldn’t be the case.

A bunch of losers have been mad about Nolan’s film for what feels like forever because he dared to cast people of color and a trans man. One of the babies leading this charge is also the richest man in the world, who claims he’ll generate his own version of the story by the end of the year that is certain to be some bland nonsense that makes it clear their reasoning was racism this whole time. There have been ample posts on X slamming the film, then explaining away its success, and even getting downright conspiratorial (if you can believe it).

But those conspiracy theories have emerged from one obvious place: jealousy! The losers are mad that the thing they think is an affront to white maleness is hella successful. People are having a blast. So, not to be left out, one of these losers shared a high-quality version of the film on X, which was viewed over two million times, according to the LA Times, before being removed. Universal, the company that released the film, was not pleased to say the least.

“We became aware of the unauthorized posting of the film and immediately initiated takedown protocols,” Universal explained in a statement. “We take copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies to protect our content and intellectual property rights.” This attempt at an own surely made some dweebs feel proud for a couple of hours, assuming they made a dent in the film’s success, but the internet isn’t the real world, and this will hardly leave a mark.

Since the X users are floating their own conspiracies about movie theaters saying “sold out” despite being empty, I’ll share one that I heard: that Elon Musk was allegedly behind the leak. Doesn’t it really seem outside the realm of possibility? The man is incredibly petty, has the funds to potentially find a high-quality version of the film to distribute, and is high enough on his own supply to believe that releasing the film this way may eat into its box office. I’d like to assume he has better things to do with his time, but I can safely assume that isn’t true.

At the end of the day, The Odyssey is a gigantic hit, despite the protestations of some weird losers, and sharing it on a site filled with people who weren’t going to see it anyway (or have and are lying about it) wasn’t going to change that.
