Christopher Nolan strikes again. The Odyssey had no real competition at the box office this past weekend because everyone else in Hollywood was smart enough to get out of the way of that huge effing horse. With its $87 million intake domestically, it more than held onto the top spot. It also broke another record, becoming Nolan’s best second weekend ever in North American theatres. It’s overtaken Obsession to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of 2026 so far. With only a 29.6% drop from its opening weekend, it’s showing impressive staying power with audiences. This is really the big Capital-E Event movie of the season, and the numbers show that.
It’s already the seventh highest-earning film of the year, and will most likely leap to number four, over Project Hail Mary and The Odyssey, by the end of this week. Can it get to $1 billion. There are three films with that honour right now: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, and Toy Story 5. The Pixar sequel has soared to the top of the list and is the highest-grossing flick of 2026 so far. Well done, Disney. Now, stop firing all your workers.
The highest ranking new release of the weekend was Hadestown: The Musical, a pro-shot of the beloved Broadway musical. Greek mythology nerds are having a great Summer. This one landed at number four with $9,692,712.
Motor City, a ’70s crime drama starring Ben Foster, grossed $1.625 million from 1,600 locations. The Indian action-thriller Jana Nayagan took in $1.35 million from 415 places. Nicholas Winding Refn’s latest, Her Private Hell, didn’t get much attention and only earned $530,000 from 675 cinemas. Pinocchio: Unstrung, another tedious horror redo of a children’s public domain classic, scared up $295,731.
In limited release news: Sheep in the Box, a Japanese drama by Hirokazu Kore-eda, made $33,090 from three places; a 4K re-release of The Piano earned $9,453 from two locations; and the Lebanese drama A Sad and Beautiful World brought in $9,054 from one theatre.
This coming week sees the release of Gregg Araki’s erotic comedy I Want Your Sex and the latest Spidey movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
