Avengers: Doomsday may be a real test for the MCU. It is no longer the superpower it once was. It’s close! There are certainly still profits to be had. However, the fatigue is real, and Kevin Feige has even allowed rumors of his eventual departure to enter the conversation. So, they’re trying to build up a lot of anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday. That includes releasing several different trailers for the film, focusing on different returning characters.
The biggest so far has been about the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. Cap is back, with a baby and a motorcycle, living in the same cozy home we left him in at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Responses to that teaser have been mixed at best, with many people feeling that Rogers was given a proper ending to his story and that trotting him back out cheapens that. It was still incredibly surprising, even if it leaked online before hitting theaters.
While the trailer was attached to the new Avatar (because Disney is trying to pump numbers for both), it also made its way onto Reddit and other sites beforehand. At first, that felt odd as hell to me. I haven’t usually paid attention to trailer leaks, but it seems like a problem that Marvel usually hasn’t had. Maybe I’m wrong, but the company usually runs a pretty tight ship that is free from leaks. Instead, Rogers’ return was spoiled, and the leaks haven’t stopped.
There will allegedly be three character-focused trailers before a final one is released. The next is rumored to feature a returning Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Unlike Evans, we knew Hemsworth would be returning, so that isn’t super surprising. That said, the trailer apparently features his new adopted daughter, a character I had completely forgotten existed. That trailer has also leaked online, but is currently running in theaters. That isn’t the case for one that includes some of the X-Men.
**Slight spoilers ahead for an Avengers: Doomsday trailer and the movie, I guess**
FOX’s X-Men returning was a big part of the announcement of this film. We know James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen are coming back. The trailer, which has made its way onto Reddit, shows Stewart and McKellen, as Professor X and Magneto, playing chess. Then, we see Marsden as Cyclops, in a battlefield, clad in his classic yellow and blue costume and firing his eyeblasts into the sky. Even blurry, I will admit, it looks rad as hell, and I marked out for it.
Still, the quality isn’t as bad as you’d expect. It seems like someone is sitting in a theater recording it. But where? And how? It isn’t in theaters yet, so presumably, someone at Disney took this low-quality video and threw it online to drum up interest. It feels less like a leak and more like a calculated PR move. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but it is interesting to see the MCU resort to such tactics. Allegedly.
