The Mets have lost fan-favorite stars Brandon Nimmo, Pete Alonso, and Edwin Diaz over the last several weeks. It’s been heartbreaking for fans of the franchise. Not only have these three ballplayers been stars (though two of them likely have their best years behind them), but they are the kind of players you build a team around. However, the Mets have a (relatively) new President of Baseball Operations, and it’s become clear that he wants to do things his own way. That’s why I’m nervous about James Gunn’s DCU.
It’s wild to think that there would be so much uncertainty about Gunn’s take on the universe, with a successful debut in Superman, but there is. Ideally, whatever large corporation snatches up Warner Bros. will see Gunn’s work as an asset. They’ll look upon the string of upcoming shows and movies and decide to take the credit without doing any of the work. That said, they could just as easily decide to ride in and start from scratch so they feel true ownership over it.
For now, we proceed as if everything is normal. The DCU will keep on humming, with a Superman sequel in the works and a Green Lantern show due to hit next fall. Before all of that, however, we will be getting Supergirl starring Milly Alcock as the titular hero. Alcock’s Kara Zor-El was one of the biggest surprises in Superman, and the film, based on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, will continue her… booze-filled adventures.
In the trailer, we see Kara venture across the galaxy with Krypto (!!!), celebrating her 23rd birthday, and clearly still dealing with the effects of witnessing Krypton’s destruction. One of Kara’s most fascinating character details is that she was in her teens when Krypton perished, unlike her cousin, who was just a baby. She remembers it all and isn’t handling it very well (can’t say that I blame her). She then meets a new, young friend, and danger ensues.
Despite the trailer’s short length, we get a sense of the scope of the film. Supergirl battles hordes of space-faring bad guys, deals with a hangover, and looks to be planet-hopping at least a little bit. We get our first (minor) look at Jason Momoa’s take on Lobo, who will debut in the movie. It also appears we’ll see what doomed this universe’s version of Krypton. DC’s new Absolute Universe shows a Krypton that was destroyed by AI, and I wouldn’t mind seeing that here.
To that end, there could be some setup for even more DC properties. Brainiac has often been behind Krypton’s destruction, so if we see that, we may get our first look at Superman’s next villain. Also, the Green Lantern show, which is said to affect the universe at large, was pushed to premiere after Supergirl, so we could see the setup for that as well. All that to say, if you can ignore the business-driven uncertainty, it’s a good time to be a DC fan (not a Mets fan, though).
