Superman, the first live-action film in the newly established and rebooted DC Universe run by James Gunn (who wrote and directed the film) and Peter Safran, opened in theaters this past July to critical acclaim and good-but-not-great box office success. Many fans have praised the film for being the Superman film they've been waiting for, and that it featured the best live-action version of the Man of Steel since the late, great Christopher Reeve. (Sorry to fans of Brandon Routh, Henry Cavill, and Tyler Hoechlin, but not you, Dean Cain, because like Radiohead, we hope that you choke.) It has even inspired some of those same fans to adopt the film's paraphrased line, "Kindness is the real punk rock" as their mantra.
It hasn't taken long for the media and for fans to wonder when a sequel to Superman can be expected in theaters. Gunn himself has stated in past interviews that he has been writing another film that would feature David Corenswet reprising his role as Superman, but refused to go into specifics as to whether it would be a direct sequel, and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO/greedy and incompetent f-ckwit David Zaslav stated in a letter to the studio's shareholders that Gunn will write and direct the next installment in the Super-Family.
Yesterday, the question was finally answered, as Gunn used his accounts on social media to announce that the Superman sequel, officially titled Man of Tomorrow, will open in theaters July 9, 2027.
Gunn's announcement being accompanied by a Jim Lee-illustrated portrait of Lex Luthor in his Warsuit standing next to Supes has already resulted in fans wondering what we should expect in Man of Tomorrow. Is Lex going to escape or be released from Belle Reve? Will we get to see him cross paths with Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis)? Why is Lex returning in this film when there are so many other Superman villains like Parasite, Livewire (I would've much preferred if she was used as one of Lex Luthor's crew members instead of the Engineer), Metallo, or Toyman who deserve their time in the spotlight instead? Is Brainiac finally going to appear on the big screen as the film's antagonist, and will things get so catastrophically bad that Supes and Lex will have to team up so they can stop him from making things worse? Will Supergirl appear in this film as well, and be a part of this possible team-up? Will this actually be a story in which Supes and Lex are both somehow transported into the future, and have no choice but to work together so they can get back to the present day?
Isabela Merced, who played Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl in Superman, and who provided one of the film's best moments when she presented that undeniable face card of hers with a smile onscreen as she told Boravian president Vasili Ghurkos (or as I call him, President Putinyahu) that she's nothing at all like Superman before dropping him hundreds of feet to his death, shared the announcement in her Instagram Stories, while also implying that she may appear in Man of Tomorrow as well.
It was also pointed out online that Man of Tomorrow will open in 2027 just a few months before The Batman Part II, the long-awaited, highly anticipated, repeatedly postponed (and forbidden by Dustin from being written about in any more Mike Redmond-penned articles) sequel to The Batman. (There have also been rumors of a Wonder Woman film possibly opening in 2027 as well, with Melissa Barrera, Courtney Eaton, and Adria Arjona being three of the most popular fancasts for Diana, princess of Themyscira.) And it has only just added even more fuel to the fire that is fans on social media wanting David Corenswet as Superman and Robert Pattinson as Batman to appear onscreen together in a World's Finest film, despite the fact that Pattinson's Batman is an Elseworlds version of the Caped Crusader, and is not in the DCU. Which hasn't stopped people from wishing and hoping and thinking and praying for Pattinson and The Batman director/co-writer Matt Reeves to change their minds, and let this fantasy become a reality.
Until both Man of Tomorrow and The Batman Part II finally hit theaters in July and (fingers crossed) October of 2027, there are still a few other projects to look forward to before then: Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl and Jason Momoa as Lobo, is scheduled to open in theaters June 26, 2026; Clayface, starring Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, and Max Minghella, opens September 11, 2026; and Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart of the Green Lantern Corps, premieres on HBO sometime next year.
But in the meantime, I'm sure that conversations on and off the Internet about this Man of Tomorrow announcement will remain positive and open-minded and upbeat, just like every other conversation about all things Superman. Because kindness, after all, is the real punk rock, and as always, there is never a dull moment when it comes to the DCEU DCU.
