It’s been a year and three days since it was announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert had been cancelled because he speaks openly and freely about what a disgrace the current Presidential administration is. A year!! Waiting for the cancellation to take place felt like it took longer than that, and also like it was over in a third of the time. It’s maddening. But that’s what happened, and that no-good, very bad, terrible administration has only gotten worse.

Colbert, on the other hand? He’s been living his best life. Just look at the header photo of the man attending the opening of Barack Obama’s Presidential Center. He’s smiling from ear to ear, and his hair is all shaggy. Sure, the wind is whipping it around, but that’s the carefree mane of a man who’s writing a movie based on one of his favorite properties with his son. Meanwhile, the man who tried to ruin his life is being booed at the World Cup Final.

But those aren’t the only incredible things going on in Colbert’s life. The man made it no secret that he is a dog lover. He’d often host segments on his show that were intent on finding homes for rescue dogs, enlisting guests to help him assist the pups. It was incredibly adorable, and it only makes sense that Colbert has a doggie all his own whom he loves. And the man returned to social media for the first time in eight weeks to wish that lil guy a Happy Birthday.

“Happy 7th Birthday, Benny,” Colbert captioned a close-up picture of his beautiful Boykin Spaniel. This isn’t the first time that Benny has made headlines for being so frigging adorable, but given everything going on, looking at this cute sweety feels like a perfect way to start a Monday. It’s also another example of Colbert living his best life, which is the perfect kind of revenge against the people who cancelled him. They want to steal or joy, and people like Stephen Colbert won’t let that happen.

He’s living life, going to Middle Earth, spending time with his family, and now, posting dog pics on Instagram. Would having a talk show on top of that be pretty fantastic? Of course! But that was taken off the table, and Colbert is doing the best he can with what he has. Luckily, he has a whole lot.
