Tonight’s the night! Stephen Colbert will be ending his run as host of The Late Show, albeit much earlier than he would have liked or expected. This last week has already been something special, with an ode to his staff, incredible guests, and an attitude that feels joyous as opposed to angry. He’s trying to end the show on his terms as much as he can, and that has been incredibly sweet to see. The whole vibe has been wonderfully loving.
That continued last night as Colbert finally sat down to take his own Questionert, which features a series of questions that he often jokes are scientifically proven to get the most out of a guest. Colbert has said in the past that he would not answer the questions himself until the show was coming to an end, and, welp, here we are. So, he sat on the other side of the desk and finally answered them, but he couldn’t do it alone!
To add to the celebratory nature of the week, Stephen Colbert was joined by a cavalcade of celebrity guests who jokingly and lovingly put his feet to the fire. Weird Al, Tiffany Haddish, Amy Sedaris, Evie McGee Colbert, and James Taylor, just to name a few. Every guest came out happy to see Stephen, with love in their eyes, and Colbert looks like he’s having the time of his life.
Seeing all of these people come together for him just feels so frigging special. It feels like an end fitting a man of Colbert’s stature. When he answers the final question, which is to describe the rest of his life in five words, he takes a beat and says, “My family, my friends, fun.” And y’all, that got me as teary as I can get. It was so sweet, and he seems ready.
I’ll attach all four videos below. It’s a doozy, but it is absolutely worth it. The end is nigh, the stars are out, now please don’t make a peep. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is drifting off to sleep.
