When I found out my kids were going to be boys (until they tell me otherwise), I was immediately filled with a sense of duty to make sure they were not dudes that women would have to worry about. They would not only be kind and accepting, but respectful. My kids will not see women as anything other than their equals, and that starts by making sure they have a good sense of respect for their mother. It’s something I have to think about constantly, as society is often trying to separate their worlds into “Boys vs Girls,” but it is worth it.
So far, I’ve already seen the seeds of my efforts bear fruit. My kids are kind and respectful, and they are like that to everybody, no matter what. They also don’t care what toys they play with, what books they’re reading, or who is the star of whatever show they are watching. Wonder Woman can do just as many impressive things as Batman in their eyes. They will often insist that their mother play with said Amazonian warrior instead of picking whoever she wants, but it’s still a work in progress.
What they don’t do is whine and complain if a female character does something heroic, cause they aren’t absolute dweebs. You’d have to have worms in your brain and a tiny, fragile little ego if you let something like that stand in the way of, ay, a major movie shoot, but lots of men suck eggs, so something like that shouldn’t be much of a surprise (though that doesn’t make it any less infuriating. Olivia Munn had to deal with such nonsense, as she recently revealed to Drew Barrymore (on her show, not, like, privately or something).
Munn explained to Barrymore that she has often played characters who are in the CIA or have to use firearms in some capacity or another, and that she ends up saving other characters. One dude did not care for that. “I remember I was in this bunker once. And if you read the script, it was that he was guarding his side, I was guarding my side, then we switch sides, and then there’s a guy that was coming for him, was gonna shoot him in the back,” she told Drew. “So, I shoot him. And then we’re about to shoot, and somehow—I guess he didn’t read the script—and in that moment, he realized, ‘Wait, wait, wait. Hold on. She can’t save me. No, no. She can’t save me.’”
The actor in question ended up throwing a fit and getting testy with the director. Finally, Munn came up with a solution: treat him like the child he was being. “‘Okay, how about instead of my character saving you, it’s just is that we switch because it’s time for us to switch, and so this is my guy to get.’ And he was like, ‘Okay,’” Munn explained. “Now here’s the interesting thing: nothing changed. It’s just what he thought. I was doing the exact same thing.”
People who have issues with stuff like that are dumb and weren’t raised properly, so it makes sense that she was able to trick him so easily! Fellas, women can do all kinds of things, and that’s especially true in scenarios where you are literally playing make-believe. Hope this was informative.
