Last week, there was a bit of a kerfuffle as James Gunn put Deadline on blast for reporting that Marisa Abela, Ella Purnell, and Adria Arjona were auditioning for a role in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow.
“Deadline’s reporting is shoddy & incorrect,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “I’ve always thought Deadline was pretty thorough in their journalism but that’s not the case here so I’m frankly disappointed. If someone would have run these names by us we would have said it’s bullsh*t. I’ve been friends with Adria a long time since I cast her in the Belko Experiment. I’m a fan of both Marisa and Ella but I’ve never met either of them. Crazy.”
Later, that same day, The Hollywood Reporter conveniently ran an exclusive report that, actually, Arjona, Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler and Grace Van Patten are in the running for the Man of Tomorrow role. Jump to Tuesday evening where Arjona has emerged the winner, which isn’t a total shock given her name has been floating around since last summer.
Here’s where things get murky. Arjona has been the rumored contender for Wonder Woman, but last week’s brouhaha added a new character to the mix: Maxima. Considering the Man of Tomorrow production seems to have a leak problem, could the sudden Maxima chatter be a headfake? Very easily. THR specifically notes that it’s unsure who Arjona is playing. That said, Gunn is a DC Comics head, and Maxima is featured very prominently in the Panic in the Sky storyline from the ’90s, which also includes Brainiac, the sequel’s main villain.
On top of that, Maxima would also fit thematically with the first film’s take on Superman’s Kryptonian parents. They wanted him to knock up half the planet in a bid for world domination, and wouldn’t you know it, Maxima is a powerful alien warrior whose whole thing is wanting to pump out super-babies. I’m not even joking. She came to Earth for the express purpose of getting some Clark Kent seed, and not the farm kind.
Will James Gunn go that route? I mean, again, the first movie’s plot revolved around people being terrified that Superman wants a harem, and that was marketed to kids. So, yeah, anything is on the table, or we’re getting a surprise Wonder Woman reveal. It’s a coin toss at this point.
