Despite his efforts to sell Superman as a satisfying standalone movie, James Gunn is actively building out a cinematic universe. Even he can’t stop from getting giddy about what’s coming down the line.
During last month’s big cover feature for Entertainment Weekly, Gunn tipped his hand that a new Wonder Woman movie is being written. Now, he may have already teased who could take over the role from Gal Gadot.
In a new interview, Gunn was asked about the fan theories that kicked up after people assumed that he recently followed Andor star Adria Arjona on Instagram. While Gunn set the record straight that he’s been following Arjona for years, he didn’t deny that she was cast as Wonder Woman. In fact, he pumped her up as a contender for the role.
Via Deadline:
“I follow Adria on Instagram but everybody came out [and said], ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman,’” Gunn said in an interview with Extra. “She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way.”Gunn continued, “She was in a movie that I made seven years ago. We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her.”
Obviously, if you’ve seen Arjona’s work in Andor, Hitman, or anything else, then you know she can nail Wonder Woman out of the park. So, I want to be clear that if she lands the part, she freaking earned it.
That said, there is an interesting wrinkle. Arjona is currently dating Jason Momoa, who is one of the select few that made the jump from the Snyderverse. Momoa didn’t even hesitate to ditch Aquaman for Lobo. I’m not saying that Momoa connection had anything do with Arjona being a contender for Wonder Woman — she was just in one of the biggest and most critically acclaimed shows of the year — but I’m sure it didn’t hurt.
