Seth Meyers Doesn't Have Time for the President-Elect's Nonsense

I’m a Dad and there are twin (almost) four-year-olds who can corroborate that. My fatherly duties include (but are not limited to) butt-wiping, joke-telling, hugs and kisses, and teaching them how to interact with the world. I can’t show them how to do everything. Some things they will have to learn themselves. I can help them navigate dealing with s***ty kids with bad manners who are selfish and will lash out at anyone in their way. My biggest piece of advice when they encounter someone like this? Say, “I don’t like that” and walk away.

It’s worked pretty well. Granted, my kids have it easier as they were born with a built-in partner/friend/hype man. There is someone their size who they can turn to for help fairly easily. For example, one of them was dealing with a mean kid at the park a few weeks ago and came to tell me about it. When I offered my standard advice, my son then returned to the kid and said, “I don’t like that, I’m walking away.” The kid was a little confused as the incident happened several minutes earlier and kids have goldfish memories. He was even more surprised when my other son realized what was going on and took a swing at him!

Regardless, my other son did not make contact (thank Zod) and my kids moved and played with each other. The other kid left them alone as his power had been neutralized. He wasn’t getting a rise out of my son so he moved on to his next target (as people like him often do). You clicked the headline, so you know this article isn’t about children. However, in a fitting yet depressing way, this all comes back to our soon-to-be (and massively childish) President.

Donald Trump went on a Truth Social rant the other night, mocking Seth Meyers while admitting that he doesn’t know how to work a television remote. He also took the opportunity to threaten Comcast which owns NBC and airs Seth Meyers’ show. While childish, it was also a stark and troubling warning of things to come over the next four years. But, again, so f***ing funny that Trump said he was “stuck” watching Meyers’ show like he doesn’t know how to work his television. Meyers agrees with me.

The host took a moment (and only a moment) to fire back at the incoming President on his show. He opened up his Closer Look talking about Pete Hegseth, the man who will (likely) soon be Secretary of Defense despite being dangerously unqualified for the job (and dangerous as a human being). He then called out Trump indirectly, saying, “If you’re a Pete Hegseth fan, here’s the bad news: I’m about to do jokes at his expense….And you might be saying, ‘Seth, why would a Pete Hegseth fan be watching your show?’ Fair point. It has come to my attention that sometimes people who do not care for me get stuck watching my show. And to those people, I would just say: you have my sympathy, and I hope you get a TV soon that allows you to change the channel.”

That’s the adult equivalent of “I don’t like this and I’m walking away.” Meyers doesn’t need to spend an entire segment roasting the incoming president. That won’t do any good. But taking a moment to call him out and then moving on is the kind of thing that will get under Trump’s skin the most. He can continue ranting into his phone, but Meyers appears unbothered. Not even naming Trump shows that he only has so much power. Yes, that power will increase when he gets into office and he could wreak real havoc with it, but that’s harder to compare to children.
