I honestly thought I had had my fill of spoof movies. There isn’t any one reason why. I’ve gotten older. Some of what was being offered didn’t seem that funny. The films that were being spoofed seemed dumb enough as it was, and at that point, what are you even making fun of? If I can’t tell the difference between a spoof and the thing it’s mocking, that’s a bad sign. I loved the new Weird Al film, but it was the closest I had to a guarantee of quality. Then, I saw the new Naked Gun.

Y’all, I laughed for that entire movie. It’s loaded with jokes and incredible performances. The film never lets its foot off the gas, and Liam Neeson delivers a performance that he felt made for. The whole cast is incredible. Paul Walter Houser, Pamela Anderson, CCH Pounder, and even my boy Cody Rhodes are hilarious and have scene-stealing moments.

The writing and directing in the cop spoof are wonderfully sound, but the cast brought everything together. A joke can be plenty funny on paper, but the person delivering it has to bring it home. When Liam Neeson laments that you can’t fight city hall, and Houser, in a quick, thrown-away tone, says, “No, it’s a building,” that’s a 50/50 script and actor breakdown. I may even make it 40/60 in favor of Houser.

To that end, I wasn’t particularly excited for the new Scary Movie, and I know that’s mostly on me. I haven’t seen the original in years, and when I did, I was far too young to get most of it. I distinctly remember thinking that during a sex scene between Ana Farris and Jon Abrahams’ characters that the former was peeing when he climaxed. Still pretty funny, to be fair! But clearly, it was not the time for me to see that film.

Regardless, my anticipation for a sixth film in the series just got shot up to the ceiling, much like Farris in the aforementioned scene, with the addition of several new and returning cast members. SNL alums Chris Elliot and Cheri Oteri will be returning after appearing in the second and first films, respectively. They’ll be joined by Heidi freaking Gardner, Damon Waynes Jr., and Kim freaking Wayans!!!

Those are all excellent choices, but Kim Wayans and Heidi Gardner have me the most excited. My family watched In Living Color together, which feels insane in retrospect, but I haven’t seen Wayans in anything since 2011’s Pariah, in which she is incredible and led to her taking on more dramatic roles in recent years. Gardner joins the cast after leaving Saturday Night Live, and I can’t think of a better place for her to wind up.

The new additions will be joining returning cast members Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Regina Hall, Anna Faris, Lochlyn Monroe, Dave Sheridan, and Jon Abrahams. This movie has the potential to be the funniest in quite some time, and this incredibly talented crew will have a lot of material to draw from the horror scene. Color me thrilled!
