You know things are about to go great when I front-load the opening to get ahead of the inevitable backlash, but I want to be 100% clear. I absolutely believe the allegations that Justin Baldoni and his associates were weirdo creeps to Blake Lively, Jenny Slate, and God knows who else. Nothing about that situation looks good for Baldoni based on the entire year and counting that this battle played out in the press.
On top of that, I’m in full agreement with Ryan Reynolds’ rep, who defended the recent release of the actor’s texts thanks to unsealed court documents. Based on what we now know, Reynolds did what any husband would do and protected his wife up to and including ripping Baldoni a new one directly to his face.
“He saw his wife fighting daily to stand up against sexual harassment in a private and respectful way, only to face retaliation for doing so,” Reynolds’ rep told Puck in a statement. “If anything, Ryan feels like he wasn’t angry enough. He passionately believes in and will stand up for the basic right to a safe workplace free of harassment and retaliation for his wife and others. Then, now and always.”
As for those texts, they include Reynolds complaining to his agent that the behind-the-scenes gossip (which was clearly onto something) overshadowed the opening weekend for It Ends With Us. More importantly, to me anyway, is that Reynolds peppered the text with a try-hard insult that makes me want to light anything Deadpool-related on fire.
Via PEOPLE:
“I’m super frustrated because this is a moment in which Blake should be celebrating. She made this unbelievable win happen,” he allegedly wrote at the time, adding, “She WILLED this weekend into reality. Baldoni and these other buckets of dumb-dumb-juice should be acknowledging the speculation and gossip themselves. They should be jumping in front of it in the most full throated, unqualified way. Now.”In that lengthy text, the Deadpool & Wolverine star, 49, claimed Baldoni and his Wayfarer Studios counterparts had “made a big f—-ing mess” and Lively “should not be subjected to some eye-roll-y narrative of the ‘controlling b——.’”
“Buckets of dumb-dumb-dumb-juice.” How has this man become one of our most bankable stars? What is wrong with the American public? *remembers who’s the president* Oh, right.
As for the controlling narrative, well, that’s not going so great for Blake. Again, I cannot stress enough that two things can be true at the same time: Baldoni was a man-bunned perv-shark in the water (Have I become what I hate?), and Blake shot herself in the foot by trying to market a domestic violence movie as a fun, boozy girls night out. Texts and emails from Sony execs show that they specifically told her not to do that, but she did it anyway while they watched in horror (and some glee) as her career exploded like the Hindenburg.
In time, the dumb-dumb-juice comes for us all.
